Winter Olympics 2026

The United States delivered a historic performance at the Winter Olympics in Milan, capturing gold in both women’s and men’s hockey and cementing its place at the top of the international stage. The United States had a record-breaking 12 gold medals finishing in second only behind Norway. 

The US men’s hockey team skated through a grueling tournament bracket before defeating Canada in a high intensity gold medal showdown. The two to one overtime victory immediately drew comparisons to the iconic run at the 1980 Winter Olympics dubbed the Miracle on Ice. The roster was packed with elite professional talent that powered the Americans to the top of the podium. A clutch overtime goal sealed the win and gave the United States men’s hockey team their first gold medal since 1980.  

The American women really stood out above everyone continuing their long dynasty of dominating the Olympics, defeating their longtime rivals Canada in another dramatic gold medal clash. The women continued there dominate play on the ice adding another gold medal onto there 2018 victory. The American girls showcased speed, precision, and relentless defense to secure the gold. The win set them atop has an international dynasty and the global standard. 

Despite the games beginning very early in local time, many of the Volunteer State Community College students woke up to watch the victories. This could very well be the most historical Winter Olympics in United States history. For many students the double gold performance wasn’t just about hockey. It was about pride, unity, and witnessing history on ice. Beating our northern neighbors at their own game was also a plus.
