If you ask anybody who was our age in the 80s, “what’s Jenny’s Phone Number?”, they will most likely reply with “867-5309,” which was from a popular song called 8675309/Jenny by Tommy Tutone. There have been several ideas and different connections for this number, but most recently, if you add the area code CSC (272) and call it, you can get free support, trusted information, help with cancer, or help for a loved one with cancer. The Nonprofit running this operation is the Cancer Support Center, in Mokena, IL.

What makes this especially meaningful is that the CSC initiative is a Small Good Thing that is simple, easy to remember, and quietly powerful. In a world full of stressful systems and crazy medical information, having a recognizable number tied to something as familiar as a song lowers the barrier for people to reach out. It doesn’t require anything, just a phone call. That simplicity is what makes it effective.

This matters a lot for our generation, who are often seen as digital-first but are also dealing with stress, anxiety, and exposure to serious health issues within their families. While our generation is used to Googling everything, not all information online is reliable, especially when it comes to something as serious as cancer. The CSC provides a trusted, human-centered alternative that cuts through misinformation and offers real support.

College students should know about this resource. At this stage of life, many are living away from home for the first time, building independence, and learning how to handle real-world challenges. Whether it’s a family member back home, a friend, or even their own health concerns, having access to a dependable support system is crucial. Knowing about the CSC means being prepared, not just academically, but personally and emotionally.

In the end, something as small as remembering a phone number can turn into something genuinely impactful. That’s what makes the CSC a Small Good Thing. It’s simple, accessible, and capable of helping people when they need it most.
