They Will Kill You is a movie that is nothing short of fun. Following on the heels of the release of Ready or Not 2: Here I Come, this movie definitely has its work cut out for it as far as expectations go. However, Zazie Beetz gives a great performance as the lead actress who goes on a tirade absolutely slicing up a hotel run by satanists.
With a runtime of 1hr 34mins, it’s very clear that director Kirill Sokolov has no time to waste and jumps straight into R-rated action.
Asia (who is played by Zazie Beetz) arrives at said hotel to take a job as a maid. She is greeted at the front door by Patricia Arquette, who plays the superintendent of the hotel named Lilith Woodhouse. From the moment she arrives at the hotel, the movie does a great job at building tension and maintaining it throughout the movie.
Asia then spends her entire night fighting her way through the hotel in hopes of being reunited with her sister after they became estranged. She encounters bizarre kinds of foes, uses an insane variety of weapons (shotguns, flaming axes, machetes to name a few) and even makes some unlikely allies.
While watching this movie, it was clear to me that Sokolov drew inspiration from popular movie Kill Bill, directed by Quentin Tarantino. Sokolov uses a variety of different camera shots and angles to showcase Beetz’s fighting ability. While this movie uses typical horror film techniques to build tension and keep you on the edge of your seat, it doesn’t follow the typical horror movie stereotype and leans more into the dark comedy genre. Whether it was the timing of dialogue, or if it was just the absolute bizarreness that took place in this movie, I found myself laughingmultiple times throughout this movie.
If I had to rate the movie, I’d give it a solid 7 out of 10. This movie knows exactly what it is, and what that is is a fun, action filled, funny horror movie. If you find yourself wanting something to do, and these types of movies pique your interest, I recommend it.
